Reader,
How to start a retinoid without wrecking your skin
Retinoids are among the best-studied ingredients for fine lines, texture, and uneven tone. They're also the most common reason people say their skin "got worse."
The fix is to go slow:
- Weeks 1 to 2: Two nights a week, pea-sized amount for the whole face.
- Weeks 3 to 4: Three nights a week if your skin feels comfortable.
- After that: Build up as your skin allows, and add moisturizer on top if you need a buffer.
- Every morning: SPF, because retinoids make skin more sun-sensitive.
Expect some dryness and flaking early on. Real results take about 8 to 12 weeks.
Pregnant or nursing? Skip retinoids and ask your doctor first.
With love and real results,
